Scripture Text:
James writes "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever
you face
trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops
perseverance". (James 1:2-3)
Thought:
One of the hardest ideas to comprehend is that sometimes, when things go
bad, it's really for the best. Take a look back at your life. Think of some of
the hard lessons you've learned. Maybe it was a failed relationship. Perhaps
you struggled through school. Or, maybe, you had a difficult job to perform.
Now, when you think of them, can you recognize how much you learned and grew from those
experiences. I know I can. The classes in school that I remember most fondly,
are the ones I hated when I was in them. The time that I had a bad boss, taught me
to appreciate the things that are important - and taught me some things about what I
didn't want to become.
James is telling us the same thing here. When you have trials or
adversities, struggle through them. In the end, you will be stronger, smarter and
more prepared for the next problem that arises.
Prayer:
Our Father in Heaven, Forgive me, Lord, when I get angry with you when times are tough.
Help me to recognize that even the tough times will help me be a better person.
Teach me, O Lord, to recognize your presence, and may I allow you to guide me
through the tough times. I pray that I won't become a fair-weather Christian, only
holding to you when times are good. May I never blame you, but always thank you, for
the hard times, as well as the good. Give me the wisdom and strength, so that
I may learn to persevere. Remind me to look to Christ as an example of one who never
backed down when faced with adversity. It is through Him that I pray. Amen.
